A fire in a home can be a devastating and life-changing event. We see, regularly how fire can destroy valuable and sacred property, injure, or kill.

The Mount Vernon Fire Department is committed to lowering the likelihood of these types of incidents occurring in our city. We will address these challenges through coalition-building between private and public organizations, fire code enforcement and compliance initiates, community-risk reduction programs and education.

_{Install the right number of smoke alarms. Test them once a month and replace the batteries at least once a year. Purchase smoke alarms here.}
_{Teach children what smoke alarms sound like and what to do when they hear one.}
_{Ensure that all household members know two ways to escape from every room of your home and know the family meeting spot outside of your home.}
_{Establish a family emergency communications plan and ensure that all household members know who to contact if they cannot find one another.}
