The Girls Embracing Maturity Program (GEM) offers a year round afterschool program and a summer leadership academy every summer with expanded learning, physical, social, and emotional development opportunities to 60 youth and their families during out of school time (OST). GEM incorporates both evidenced based approaches and promising strategies to equip middle school aged girls with opportunities to develop healthy attitudes, behaviors and skills during their transition from adolescence to young adulthood. All activities are grounded in the positive youth development rationale.
GEM Summer Leadership Academy was created in 2011 to provide a summer experience for girls who are too young to work and too mature for summer camp. The GEM Summer Leadership Academy will allow 25 girls to learn a new career each day, particularly within the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Participants will attend weekly fun field trips and be paid a modest stipend at the end of the 5 weeks period.
